Chapter 5

At Sam’s suggestion, to prevent Mars Finley from saying the word that would transport him out of their custody, Chief Taylor had Mars handcuffed and gagged.

On a monitor, Sam watched Mars pace angrily back and forth within the confines of the interrogation room. She had to admit he looked just as handsome angry. Too bad he was an alien.

Chief Taylor studied Mars on the display. “I’ve known pit bulls who look less dangerous than him. You up for this?”

She sighed. “No, but let’s do it anyway.”

There was a definite chill in the air as she and her boss entered the interrogation room. Mars glared at her, and she was glad he was still cuffed. The furious look on his face indicated he’d like to strangle her for betraying him.

The only human on the station he could trust, he had said. She had done her job, so why was she feeling so guilty?

Chief Taylor shut off the security camera in the room. He pivoted towards Mars. “I’m told if I remove the gag, you’ll disappear.”

Mars huffed and continued to stare at her.

She lifted her chin and met his icy gaze straight on. Not in a million years would she regret turning him in. It was her job. She hoped he’d understand. By the looks of him and his hostile gaze, he’d never forgive her.

“Sam explained who you are and why you’re here. I have agreed with her assessment that it would be a waste of valuable time to thoroughly interrogate you, round up your compatriots, and let our scientists have a go at physically and medically examining all of you.” Chief Taylor glanced at Sam and frowned. “That’s if we knew where your fellow aliens were.”

Mars’ eyes widened in surprise.

She managed a weak smile. Not a complete betrayal, but he still would never forgive her. “Thanks to you, I now do care.”

Chief Taylor crossed his arms against his chest and cleared his throat in annoyance. “She refuses to divulge their whereabouts. Says it’s not pertinent to our problem and might only make matters worse, so I’ll let it go for now. But later…”

“Understood,” Mars said.

Taylor removed a small vial from his pocket. It contained yellow slime.

“I will give you this, but first, I insist you answer a couple of questions. Agreed?”

Mars stared at the vial like a starving man eyeing his first food in weeks. He nodded fiercely.

With a flick of his hand, Taylor directed Sam to unlock the handcuffs. She did so, then backed away, unsure how Mars would react. The vibes coming off him seemed to be in grizzly bear mode.

He refused to look at her. With an angry grunt, he removed the gag and threw it away. “Ask.”

“Sam said four of you died after coming here. How?”

“Two days ago, there was a malfunction, a blockage in your waste management system.”

Sam looked at Chief Taylor. “Is that true?”

Taylor frowned. “That’s correct. For about half an hour. No one could figure out what had caused it or why it began working again.
